A BLOCK, or restriction, is created when a student has a situation that needs to be addressed prior to registering. A block can be instituted because of returned mail, lack of payment, parking tickets, need to take placement test, unmet prerequisites, or various other restrictions.

Most Areas of the College that create these restrictions (or Blocks) are part of the Registration Areas that are open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and Fridays, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Some times are restricted and are noted in the schedule. Other offices operate daytime hours only: Director of Admissions and Records, Treasurer's Office, Community Education, and of Student Services. Appointments should be made to remove the restriction concerning those areas.

- Application Hold. No application is on file for the student.
- College Transcript. Does not block registration. Needed for prerequisites and completion of courses and degrees.
- High School Transcript. Needed for Financial Aid and to receive a Degree or Certificate from the institution. Block can be negotiated for non-Financial Aid. Used as a method to get transcript in file.
- Foreign Student. All students who were not born in the United States must provide proof of their citizenship, residency and Visa status. This function is processed in the Admissions area and recommended by the Foreign Student Counselors who issue special I-20 Visas.
Physical Fitness and Athletic Center, (708) 596-2000 ext. 2334.
- Athletic Equipment. College Athletes who have failed to return equipment or books to the Athletic Office. Could be from previous participation.
- No Schedule Change. Athletes must have their schedules approved by the Athletics office. All changes must be processed in person.

- NSF Check. A check was returned for non-sufficient bank funds and must be covered plus $20.
- Past Due Deferred Payment. Student owes money.
- Pell Grant Bill. Student received Federal Financial Aid and for some reason the aid was removed for one or more classes and the student must pay the monies owed.
- Student Bill. Student owes money for multiple reasons.
- SDF Bill. Student Development Fees from the past which have not been paid. (Older than 8 years.)
- Traffic Fine. If fine totals more than $25 it must be paid immediately.

- Community Education. Courses in Community Education have resulted in a restricted status at the College.
Counseling Center, main campus room 2350, call (708) 596-2000 ext. 2306 for appointment.
- Academic Dismissal. Dismissed from the College for GPA. Can be readmitted through Counseling. SOAP/academic probation.
- Dismissal. Dismissed from the College for GPA. May be readmitted through Counseling after a stop-out period. SOAP/academic probation.
- Limit Credits< 7 Credits. Due to probationary status, registration credit hours are limited. Does not prevent registration.
- Limit Credits < 13 hours. Due to probationary status, registration credit hours are limited. Does not prevent registration.
- Prescriptions is Group Advising. Students who take the Placement Test, but who do not follow through to schedule a visit with a Counselor or a Group Advising Session get this block.
- SOAP/Probation. When the GPA falls below a progressive percentage point, it triggers automatic blocks concerning the Students Academic Progress. Must see a counselor.

- Financial Aid Office. Student may have insufficient or inaccurate paperwork, or be missing some important piece to the collection of Financial Aid at the College.
- Map Grant. Does not affect Registration. There is some issue with the paperwork of the State of Illinois Map Grant that needs addressing.

- Library Fine. Books, late fees, etc.
- Telecourses. Late fee, overdue tapes in Telecourse Lab. Owe money.

- FERPA Privacy Request. Students who do not want any information released to any source may request privacy. Does not affect registration.
- Registrar. Some issue is creating a problem for the records of the student, or the issue may have been repeated over and over causing records problems. Must make an appointment to rectify.

- College Mail Returned. The college has received returned mail for the student and this places the location of the residency in jeopardy.
- Employer Letter. Students who Work-in-district, in Lake County, Indiana, or whose company belongs to the Southland Chamber of Commerce may not as yet presented the letter proving this status. Letter must be on official letterhead, dated and signed with a contact phone number on it. This entitles the student to a reduced tuition rate and therefore needs to be provided.
- Residency. The residency of a student is in question. The student may have moved with no proof or may have had some complication that caused alarm to their residency status.

- Emergency Loan. Owe monies to the College for a small loan.
- Treasurer's Office. Owe monies to the College for scholarship or other purposes.

- VP Student Services. Usually related to a behavioral problem preventing registration of student at the college.
- Unmet prerequisites, need to see a counselor.
- OCS 121, Transfer Course enrollee, needs to register for course.
- Developmental Course required. Some course in the developmental course sequence is missing. Reading 080, 081 and 082 must be taken and completed first. A student must register for any of them, if the test indicated such.
- Other developmental courses will show "Unmet Prerequisites": English 097, 098, 099 and Math 091, 093, 095, 096, 100.
- Placement Test Required. If the student has not taken a placement test at SSC, once s/he registers for more than eight hours, the system blocks any additional registrations. If the student has taken a placement test at another school, s/he needs to see a counselor. This is also true for Codes, B0101-95, high school student or B0101-98, Human Success student. Human Success are limited to 12 credit hours total. Counselors are able to handle all inquiries concerning testing or B0101 codes. - Over the Credit limit. If the student is a student at large, (curriculum code B0101-97), or a B-0101-93 with no High School, no GED, or B0101-96, currently attending GED, see Asset Test Required. If the student is a reverse transfer, (Code B0101-99) s/he is limited to 12 cumulative hours in the spring and/or fall, or 16 cumulative hours in the summer, before selecting a degree curriculum.
- Needs Signature. Certain Curriculums such as OTA, RAD TECH, PNU and ADN Nursing, Paralegal, MRI, MAM, PHB and PHT require admission to the program and may require signatures to register. These students should register by the batch process through the program coordinator or career advisor. Likewise, certain Internship courses in Business, Paralegal, Child Development, etc. also have internships that require signatures and must be registered in person. Signatures are needed for internships CHD 211, CHD 212 and BUS 253, BUS 254.
- Time Conflict. All time conflicts must be registered in person, even if it is stopping and starting at the same time. Requires signatures both faculty of the courses in question, then visit registration window - 2nd floor main or UCC, (708) 596-2000 ext. 2328
- Repeated Courses. All courses that are being repeated, for whatever reason, must be registered in person. Registration window - 2nd floor main or UCC, (708) 596-2000 ext. 2328
- High School students must register in person as long as they are classified as a high school student, because we track the courses they are taking here for the IBHE. Registration window - 2nd floor main or UCC, (708) 596-2000 ext. 2328
- Students using a work-in-district letter, Southland Chamber member letter, work in Lake County Indiana letter, or using a cooperative or chargeback agreement can register online, but must have the fees adjusted in person at any registration window - bring appropriate documentation.
- Master File block comes on, it is because the student has not taken classes here in some time, usually more than 5 years. We need to get verification of their personal information. They need to proceed to Admissions to update their file, then they can register online.
