South Suburban College announces a program that will provide an opportunity for individuals who have been laid off as a result of the struggling economy to improve their situations. The SSC Board of Trustees granted the administration permission to implement a tuition-free program for residents of College District 510 who have become unemployed. Qualified Rebound Students do not pay tuition costs or fees, only their books.
The Rebound courses will be offered in 16 academic areas ranging from healthcare to technology, within class sections that have the capacity for growth. Some of the programs may require prerequisites or other provisions for entry. All Rebound materials including process forms and a complete course listing are available in the Job Training Office.
Seats in these classes will be on a first come, first served basis–as class space fills up new sections will not be opened.
The basic qualifications for SSC’s Rebound include but are not limited to the following criteria:
- Must live within South Suburban College (SSC) District 510
- Have become unemployed anytime since January 1, 2011, and are still currently unemployed (but may have exhausted unemployment benefits) · Have filed a claim for Unemployment Insurance and provide verification of eligibility benefits. (If the individual is ineligible to apply for unemployment insurance due to having worked for a non-profit organization, SSC will accept a letter from the previous employer. The letter must be on company letterhead and list the dates of full-time employment and a statement that the applicant “was not terminated for cause.” SSC staff will contact the employer to verify the information.)
- Are required to sign a Release of Information Authorization Form
- Are interested in one of the approved Rebound programs (classes are subject to availability following the first class de-registration of the semester)
Prospective students will be evaluated to meet the Rebound specifications in the Job Training department of the college. Job Training is located in Room 4461 of the main campus in South Holland. No appointment is necessary. For more information, please call 708-596-2000 x2530.
“Because of the job market, I was looking to get back to school. When you are on unemployment they don’t offer you the chance to go back to school, but SSC did. The REBOUND program is completely free and was right here for me.”
-- Kimberly Banks, 35, Medical Coding and Billing student
“I was formerly in sales and was looking for a change. The REBOUND program couldn’t have been more perfect for my situation. I am looking forward to starting a completely new career in Phlebotomy. I don’t know why anyone who is currently unemployed wouldn’t want to take advantage of REBOUND.”
-- Noel Morales, 55, Phlebotomy student
