26th Annual College & Career Expo Coming to South Suburban College September 23rd

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL—Career Development System (CDS) is holding their 26th annual College & Career Expo at South Suburban College (SSC) on Wednesday, September 23, 2015, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., in the Fitness Center.  The Expo is an excellent opportunity for 8th grade, high school and SSC students, along with their parents, to explore a wide range of college and career options at one time, in one location.  Admission and parking are FREE and the event is conveniently located at SSC’s Main Campus in South Holland.

This cooperative venture is designed to provide the most current information available regarding post-secondary educational opportunities across the country.  More than 120 universities, colleges, technical school, armed forces, and construction trades will be featured.  Career programs available at SSC will be highlighted. Additionally, counselors will be on hand to help direct students and parents and Junior Achievement and ISAC (Illinois Student Assistance Corps) will be in attendance.

The College & Career Expo is open to all residents of the area who are interested in furthering their education.

South Suburban College Student Artists Win Best Group Project Award for Tinley Park’s Benches on the Avenue Contest

TINLEY PARK, IL–Six South Suburban College (SSC) Art & Design students were presented with a municipal award from Tinley Park last week for their artistic bench entered in Tinley Park’s annual Benches on the Avenue contest. Rina Briz of Markham, Devin Walker of Lansing, Kathleen DeJong of Lansing, Narita Sharma of Lansing, Alexis Jannotta of Midlothian, and Sarah Keyes of Tinley Park received the award for Best Group Project for their entry “Girl Power Rules.”

This was SSC’s first ever student entry in the 12th annual public art program that displays decorative benches along Oak Park Avenue from 172nd to 176th streets. Benches on the Avenue has become one of the Village’s most popular attractions, drawing thousands of residents and visitors annually to the downtown area. The colorful benches feature the work of both amateur and professional artists. This year’s competition was themed Heroes and Villains and all 20 benches will continue to be displayed through October 2, 2015.

“The bench was a great opportunity for our students to create and compete in a public art competition and commission,” said Jack Kirkpatrick, SSC Art & Design Program Coordinator. “I’m so pleased their outstanding work was rewarded with the Best Group Project award, and I am appreciative to Tinley Park for inspiring such wonderful creations through this unique art program.”

The SSC Art & Design Program awards Associate Degrees and certifications with classes in painting, drawing, sculpting, pottery, photography, graphic design and more. Golf Outing to Support Bulldogs Baseball Program Coming to Lincolnshire CC September 18th

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The South Suburban College Baseball Team is hosting their 10th Annual Bulldog Baseball Golf Outing to raise funds for athletic equipment and travel costs for nationwide tournaments. The Bulldog Golf Outing will take place on Friday, September 18, 2015, at Lincolnshire Country Club in Crete, Illinois.

Registration begins at 12 noon with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. The cost is $100.00 per golfer which includes golf (four‐man scramble) with dinner and door prizes to follow. Hole‐sponsorships are also available for $100.00.

Late Start College Open House Coming to SSC’s Oak Forest Center September 9th

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting a Late Start College Open House at the Oak Forest Center on Wednesday, September 9th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Attendees will learn more about SSC programs and services and the fall Late Start class offerings, as well as have an opportunity to tour the Oak Forest Center facility. The Open House is an excellent opportunity for prospective students who missed the fall semester deadline to still get enrolled, and for current students to expand their schedules learn more about SSC’s extension site.
The Late Start classes are offered in a variety of subject areas including Accounting, Art, Building Construction Technology, Biology, Business, Community Health Worker, Computer-Aided Design, Computer Information Sciences, Court Reporting, Emergency Medical Services, English, Health Information Technology, Foundations for College Success (OCS), Mathematics, Manufacturing, Medical Assistant, Music, Office Administration & Technology, Pharm Tech, Philosophy, Physical Education, Psychology, Reading, Sociology, Spanish, Speech, Study Skills, Teacher Aide/Child Development, and more.

Payment is currently due at the time of registration for Late Start classes, but Financial Aid can be utilized for the 12-week credit classes (FAFSA must be completed by September 14th). SSC’s Financial Aid Office encourages all students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible at fafsa.gov using institution code 001769.
