Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults and children who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Adult Education Department administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

For more information about Family Reading Night or the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, please contact Raylynn Stokes, coordinator, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc.edu.   South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, Illinois. This event is sponsored by the SSC Foundation.

Show Me The Money…Please?

Every year, South Suburban College offers an abundance of scholarships. These scholarships come with certain guidelines to apply, but there are many to choose from and one could be waiting for you. Unsure of how to get started? Not an issue! This post will help you get started or hopefully encourage you to apply. There are a total of five steps.
Step one is extremely simple. Find the scholarship booklet around campus. It looks like this:

Or you can click on this link to take a look at the scholarships online: http://www.ssc.edu/admissions-registration/scholarships/.
Underneath each scholarship, there are requirements needed to apply, so make sure to read carefully. It may also help to speak with a counselor if you are second guessing your eligibility. It never hurts to apply, even if you do not fully meet all of the credentials. You might end up surprising yourself. Here is an example of some of the scholarships and requirements:

After you have your list of scholarships together, the next step (I suggest) would be to speak with an SSC faculty member that knows you well enough to give you a letter of recommendation. This is why it is important to form a bond with professors while you’re here. They go beyond the call of just being your instructor, and many will be happy that you asked for their help.

Having fun yet? Next, get your thinking cap on. It is time to write your personal essay stating how the scholarship(s) will benefit you. Spend some time on this part. Make sure to mention your chosen career path so they get a better understanding of your direction. Another pointer: Triple check your grammar, along with punctuation before printing. You do not want to come off uneducated, so try having a family member or friend proofread your work, if possible. You’ll be amazed at how much team work can help you out. One last note, your statement is only 250 words or less, so don’t panic.
How are you feeling? Excited? Tired? It’s understandable, but you are so close to the finish line. Time to take a look at the actual application form. You can view it here and/or print it here: http://www.ssc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/StudentScholarshipApp2017.pdf. This is what it should look like:

Take your time filling each section out carefully so there will be no need for white out. Now, before placing everything together, there is one more important detail. You need to print out a current transcript of your grades. Those can be located in the SSC portal under academic profile.

Deep breath. Inhale and exhale slowly. You’re finished! I would paperclip all of the material together, rather than staple. It might make it easier for the individuals reading your submission. You can turn in your completed forms to the Foundation Office (Room 2134) or the Financial Aid Office (Room 2355). But remember, the deadline is closing in (March 31st) so don’t wait!

South Suburban College ESL Class Helps the Homeless

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College’s English as a Second Language (ESL) class once again participated in a “Mats for the Homeless” Workshop Service Learning project.

The mats are created with plastic bags from the SSC Recycling Center. The students cut the bags into strips and make plastic yarn or “plarn.” They use the plarn to crochet mats for the homeless as a waterproof barrier. Millicent Collier, Service Learning Coordinator, said it takes between 600-700 plastic bags to make one mat. It is very labor intensive, and the ESL class has been a big help in this process. The students benefit from the workshop because it’s different than their normal classroom setting, and it provides a safe place for them to practice communication while helping the community at the same time. All students receive service learning credits in the process. Ms. Collier also noted that a lot of SSC instructors whose classes participate in these workshops see value in this Service Learning project because it helps our students develop stronger soft skills while serving the community and creates awareness of community needs.

Adult Education Instructor Camille Johnson said, “It’s important that our students understand that it’s the responsibility of each of us to give something back. I’m so proud that our students are willing to sacrifice a few hours of math and science to help others less fortunate.”

English as a Second Language (ESL) allows non-native students to improve their English skills from beginning to advanced levels. South Suburban College’s Adult Education Department offers a wide range of opportunities for adults to build the basic skills required for success. For enrollment and class information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2385 or ext. 2240, or visit www.ssc.edu under “Adult and Continuing Education, Adult Education.”

You can participate too! Recycle your plastic bags at SSC’s Recycling Center just outside the Bookstore OR attend a workshop on campus and receive Service Learning credits. For more information about Service Learning at SSC go to http://www.ssc.edu/academics/service-learning.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

As we enter into March, my mind quickly goes into how I made it to the halfway mark of the college semester. Just like many others, I am trying to pull together everything I have learned so far into one nice package for midterms. Nothing else seems to matter at this point, which is why I was unaware that this month should hold an important meaning for many women in the world. March is considered to be Women’s History Month! To help educate students in this area, Student Life is holding a contest to see if we can name thirty-seven famous women in history by looking at their picture. Of course, I can name the ones I have learned about through school and those who I’ve watched on television. But, my eyes stare blankly at the last twenty-three slots I have left to fill. My mind assures me that I have seen these faces before, but I can’t seem to recall when.

Day two of working on the Famous Women Contest, and it looks like I heard about many of them, but have not seen their pictures in years. I have learned though that many of these women are hardly brought up anymore. Of course, we hear about Hillary Clinton because of politics and of Rhianna since music is universal, but when is the last time someone spoke about Wilma Rudolph becoming the fastest woman in the 1960s after completing the 100 and 200 meter dash? Or the last time anyone has read the works of Maya Angelou? No, I am not pondering these questions just to stall time searching for these answers. I honestly think our history of women is dying and we should really consider sitting down and talking with our youth about how powerful they were and still are.

Final day with trying to figure out these last twelve and even if I do not win this contest, I can truly say that I have learned or re-learned about women in history. I have even found myself questioning why certain women were not included and then realized that, if they were, the contest would never end. This one is indeed very tricky but rewarding for everyone, and I highly recommend students to take a trip to the Student Life and Leadership Office and grab a copy. The contest will be running until Thursday, March 30th, and three lucky winners will win a thirty dollar bookstore gift certificate. Just make sure to identify thirty or more of the women in history correctly. To anyone who has completed this form, I salute you.

Women Empower One Another

This Friday, South Suburban College will be hosting the Chicago Women’s Conference presented by the Business & Career Institute. The event will open with a powerful keynote speaker. Caprice O’Bryant will share her amazing story and introduce you to Excuse Free Fitness, Inc. Her business is helping not only women, but men as well. I would love to share everything I have learned about her, but it may take away her thunder. Her presentation is something I recommend no one miss and make sure to bring tissue. Her experiences will move you and make you see that anything is possible.

There will also be speakers for health and wellness at the event. Not only will they address healthy eating habits and trying to live stress free, Dawn Avery (also known as Dawn the Dancin Deeva) will bring us the beauty of line dancing. No experience is needed and it’s a great cardio workout, all while letting the music move your body! I’ve always wanted to join a dance workout class. If you feel the same this may be your chance!

Not only will entrepreneurs like, speaker Stephanie Walters of Blue Top Marketing, Inc. share their stories about how to build a business from scratch, but they will also give advice along with excellent tips on how to motivate yourself. I never thought about starting my own business, but having the knowledge of it wouldn’t hurt.

The exhibitions I find to be right up everyone’s alley is the personal empowerment speakers. Women are extremely powerful, but sometimes life does take its toll and we become hard on ourselves. Each of the speakers will be addressing many issues of life and giving participants a chance to freely express what is going on in their lives.

I think this convention will give attendees a new outlook on life after interacting with everyone. I hope attendees share all the knowledge they collect from speakers with one another as well as others in their lives. For a detailed listing of speakers and a schedule of events, please visit http://thechicagowomensconference.org/. This will also be helpful when planning your day accordingly so you will not miss out on the activities. Hopefully you’re able to make some new connections at this event!

“Recent Drawings” Art Exhibition by Gregg Hertzlieb on Display at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College (SSC) is pleased to present a new exhibition located in the Dulgar Gallery on SSC’s Main Campus in South Holland. An exhibition of art works by Gregg Hertzlieb titled “Recent Drawings” is on display March 6 to April 21, 2017. There will be an afternoon reception for the artist on March 27th at 12:30 p.m.

Gregg Hertzlieb is the director/curator of the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. He has a master’s degree in fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a master’s degree in education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. An exhibiting artist working primarily in watercolor and pen and ink, Hertzlieb has shown his art in numerous exhibitions. His work is in both public and private collections.

Hertzlieb is the editor of numerous books, including The Calumet Region: An American Place (2009) and Domestic Vision: Twenty-Five Years of the Art of Joel Sheesley (2008), as well as a contributor to the books The Art of George Ames Aldrich (2013), The Indiana Dunes Revealed: The Art of Frank V. Dudley (2006) and American Railroad China: Image and Experience (2008). In addition to performing his duties at the museum, Hertzlieb teaches Museum Studies, Managing Facilities, and Printmaking; serves as art editor for Valparaiso University’s journal The Cresset; and contributes essays on Brauer collection objects to the Valparaiso Poetry Review. Hertzlieb is a native of Northwest Indiana and lives in LaPorte.

Hertzlieb describes his work as, “I hope to tell a story in my pictures, and the story is basically an extended investigation of who I am and what I discover in the landscape of both my imagination and the region I call home. In a sense, I wish my works to function like a message in a bottle, where through the drawings I reach across time and space to communicate to the viewer the way I felt, the things I was thinking about, as I created the picture.”

The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the first floor. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. Chicago Women’s Conference Star Award Winners Inspire Women to Excel

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Encouraging and supporting women is what The Chicago Women’s Conference is all about. The Star Awards, which will be presented at the Conference being held at South Suburban College on March 17, continues that theme by recognizing women for their outstanding leadership in business, community activities and/or education and encouragement of others to also be STARS. In the nominator’s eyes, the “STAR” is a role model because she is not only achieving her own goals, but through her inspiring actions has profoundly motivated others to do the same. This year marks the second year of the Star Awards and two Awards will be presented at the upcoming Chicago Women’s Conference, including one that recognizes lifetime achievement of a South Suburban College alumna.

Bridgett Annicks, a 2017 Star Award winner, was nominated for being an outstanding model educator who has touched the lives of many children as a first grade teacher at Oak Glen School in Lansing. She is innovative, creative and strives to foster excitement for learning in all her students. Her attributes include patience, compassion and enthusiasm. She goes out of her way to ensure that children get the best start in education and experience the simple pleasures of life.

Janice Crowe, the 2017 Star Award South Suburban College Lifetime Alumna Achievement awardee, is a proud graduate of the SSC (then Thornton Community College) Registered Nursing Program. Janice was recognized by her nominator for her many talents and accomplishments as well as for being down-to-earth and genuine. As a Charge Nurse at Oak Forest Hospital, Janice has always been respected by both staff and patients. She is known for her dedication, leadership and willingness to embrace change. She has been an active community member, genealogy expert, and go-to person for her many areas of insight.

Plan to attend the Ninth Annual Chicago Women’s Conference to congratulate these two Star Award winners on Friday, March 17 from 7:30 am until 3:30 pm. at South Suburban College, located at 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, IL. The advance ticket price of $25 includes a full day of activities: a keynote speaker, several breakout sessions, a continental breakfast and boxed lunch, and plenty of shopping opportunities.
