About the Business & Career Institute (BCI)

The Business & Career Institute (BCI) is your regional headquarters for workforce preparation, employee training and business development. BCI provides training, consulting, and economic and business development resources for the Chicago Southland. BCI works with a number of industries including agriculture, business & information, construction, education, health services, hospitality, manufacturing and transportation. Our clients include small to medium size businesses located throughout the Chicago southland area although BCI has been recruited by companies throughout the country to provide needs assessments and training.

Through Customized Training, courses, seminars, workshops and special events are offered on a variety of topics including but not limited to computer skills, professional development/soft skills, manufacturing quality improvement, Lean Training, and Tooling U. Training is provided at the main campus, the Oak Forest Center and on-site at the business. Many courses are available online as well.

For companies with specialized or technical training needs, the Business & Career Institute staff will perform a thorough needs analysis and design a course which will meet or exceed a company’s expectations. A qualified instructor (which may or may not be SSC faculty) conducts the training program in accordance with the approved training objectives and outlines. Once the training program is complete, an evaluation is conducted and the results are reviewed with a company representative to determine the training impact as well as future training needs.

A few examples of customized courses include ISO 9001, Internal Auditor, M-1003 Quality Management System Refresher, Statistical Process Control, and computer network and operating systems. With regard to professional development/soft skills, BCI is a leader in delivering solution-focused training and workshops in customer service, effective workplace communication, teambuilding and various other interpersonal and workforce performance skill sets.

Another service that sets BCI apart from other training companies is its ability to assist companies with meeting human resource needs. BCI can develop, update or revise an Employee Handbook, Policy & Procedure Manual, a Performance Evaluation System and/or any human resource document.

Some of BCI’s newest programs include the Consumer Wellness Advocate (CWA) Certification Training, the Highway Construction Careers Training Program and the Construction Business Development Center. BCI is continuously evaluating its programs and services to deliver highest quality of training to customers. Since many companies experience basic skill deficiency with their workforce, BCI is available to help through our Workplace Basic Skills Enhancement services, offered through grant opportunities. SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) is also on hand to provide counseling assistance for people who wish to start a business or need other business support.

As a service to the community, BCI is home to a Licensure and Certification Testing Center, providing a variety of primarily computer-based examinations for many sponsoring organizations in a comfortable, secure and dependable environment. BCI administers the ACT WorkKeys® assessments to employees, individuals and businesses to assess a person’s basic skill level to possibly attain a National Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) or to seek certification for Paraprofessionals (Teacher Assistants). The testing center is also a Pearson VUE test site for many types of exams including various IT certifications and the computer-based GED® Test. BCI is also a Certiport site for “Microsoft (MCAS, also MTA, IC3 and QuickBooks). Other test sponsors that BCI hosts are the MSSC (Manufacturing Skills Standards Council for Production and Logistics), Comira and Innovative Exams for IL state exams for EMT, Paramedic and Cosmetology.

Throughout the year, the Business & Career Institute organizes several special events including The Chicago Women’s Conference & Expo, held in March each year and the Manufacturing Conference, featured yearly in the fall. Breakfast with BCI is a monthly workshop tailored to the needs of the local business owner, executive or employee. Topics are selected per industry need and are nominal in cost to ensure affordability.
