South Suburban College maintains the men’s sports of baseball, basketball, and soccer. The women’s sports programs include basketball, softball, volleyball, and soccer.
In March of 2022, the Men’s Basketball Team won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament to become the first National Champion in SSC history. The win capped off a perfect 33-0 season, another first for the program.
The SSC Women’s Soccer Team experienced their most successful season in 2021 with a first-time appearance at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament in Wichita, KS. Following this competition, Amaris González went on to be named First Team All-American by the NJCAA DII Women’s Soccer Committee.
South Suburban College is very proud of our athletic program and its 45 Region IV Championships. We have excellent coaches who motivate the student-athletes to not only win their athletic events but to succeed in the classroom. Our athletes transfer to four-year Colleges and receive athletic scholarships.
Four SSC head coaches have been inducted into sports Hall of Fames. Head Baseball Coach Steve Ruzich was inducted into the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in May 2014. In February 2016, then Women’s Basketball Head Coach Darrell Scott was inducted into the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame. Coach Scott had a record at the college of 543-351 when he retired at the end of the 2019-2020 season. Head Men’s and Women’s Soccer Coach Jose “Tony” González was inducted into the Region IV NJCAA Coach Hall of Fame in 2018. As SSC Men’s Soccer coach, Coach Tony ranks in the Top 10 among all NJCAA active head coaches in wins. Head Men’s Basketball Coach John Pigatti was inducted into the Region IV Hall-of-Fame in November of 2023. Coach Pigatti added his first National Championship to the 13 Regional Championships he has won during his 19-year tenure as head coach.
