South Suburban College offers men’s sports in soccer, basketball, and baseball, alongside women’s programs in volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball.
In March 2022, the Men’s Basketball Team capped off an undefeated 33-0 season by winning the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Championship—the first national title and perfect record in SSC history. The Women’s Soccer Team achieved its most successful season in 2021, making its debut at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Wichita, Kansas.
SSC takes great pride in its athletic programs and numerous Region IV Championships. Our dedicated coaching staff motivates student-athletes to excel both on the field and in the classroom, helping many transfer to four-year colleges on athletic scholarships. Several of our coaches have earned honors:
- Steve Ruzich (Head Baseball Coach): Inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in May 2014.
- Darrell Scott (Former Women’s Basketball Head Coach): Inducted into the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame in February 2016.
- Jose “Tony” González (Former Men’s and Women’s Soccer Head Coach): Inducted into the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame in 2018.
- John Pigatti (Former Men’s Basketball Head Coach): Inducted into the NJCAA Region IV Hall of Fame in November 2023.
