Paralegal Program Open House Coming to Oak Forest

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College will be hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., at the college’s Oak Forest Center in Room 5190. Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/Legal Assistant curriculum, including the Associate Degree and certificate programs. In addition, former students from the program, working as paralegals, will be present to answer questions.

The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in legal research and writing techniques including compilation and analysis of data, understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology, and preparation of legal documents.

“Whether you are looking for a change in your career path or looking to begin a career, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the law,” says Jason Cieslik, J.D., Coordinator for the Paralegal Studies Program.

SSC has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the south and southwest suburban Chicago region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction.

While the majority of the paralegal classes are offered at SSC’s Oak Forest Center (conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue), some classes are offered online. For more information, please contact Mr. Jason Cieslik at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2579 or email JCieslik@ssc.edu.

South Suburban College Dedicates 90-Year Anniversary Display

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– South Suburban College hosted a dedication ceremony for the new College History Wall and Display on Thursday, November 9, 2017 in the atrium of the College’s Main Campus. The display features photos and memorabilia from the college’s 90-year history. Many students, faculty, staff and administrators joined us in honoring the institution that has made its place in the community and enriched the lives of so many. Before cutting the ribbon, College President Don Manning highlighted the role the college has played in the lives of so many students, and how students today share the same hope for the future as those who came before.

South Suburban College was once known as Thornton Community College and Thornton Jr. College. In 1927, a small group of high school graduates gathered at Thornton Township High School on 151st street in Harvey. They were the start of what is now a 90-year legacy of educational opportunity for residents of the south suburban region.

South Suburban College continues to grow with the changing cultural, technological and educational needs of the 21st century. Throughout our many years of service, thousands of people have received their education and gone on to improve their lives and their community. We at SSC are proud of our history of quality, convenience and affordability. The wall and display are now permanent features of the college located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, IL. The public is invited to stop by Monday through Friday to view the display. A video segment spotlighting the Dedication may be seen at https://youtu.be/N89tsv2_Cq0.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members came to hear Commander Phillip Willis of the National Association of Black Veterans speak on “Freedom, Sacrifice, and Honor.” He told of his experiences and advised the audience to please “thank veterans for their service” as they have made an ultimate commitment to preserve the freedoms that we, as U.S. citizens, enjoy today. His speech brought applause and some tears as many thanked him afterwards.

A panel of SSC students and staff rounded out the presentation. They included:
