South Suburban College’s Associate Nursing Program Earns Accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN)

South Holland, IL – South Suburban College (SSC) announces that its Associate in Applied Science nursing program has achieved accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) through Spring 2028. This recognition follows a review process and on-site visit, leading to the ACEN Board of Commissioners’ approval during their September meeting.

Dr. Linda Brown-Aldridge, the Dean of the Nursing Program, shared her thoughts on the accreditation, “This accreditation stands as proof of the unwavering commitment and hard work demonstrated by our SSC faculty, the institution’s executive leadership, and our dedicated students.” Dr. Stokes, President of SSC, emphasized the significance of ACEN accreditation, saying, “Attaining ACEN accreditation is a pivotal milestone for our nursing program. It underscores the dedication of our team and their unwavering commitment to improving the student experience.”

The accreditation process included an assessment and planning effort aimed at improving the nursing curriculum and education experience. Dr. Brown-Aldridge and her team have submitted data to ACEN, covering nursing curriculum, cohort information, and other pertinent data, reaffirming SSC’s dedication to improvement.

Dr. Tasha Williams, SSC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, voiced her vision for the future,

“This accreditation solidifies our position as a provider of nursing education in the Southland. We remain committed to equipping students with the skills they need to make a positive impact on patient care and the community.”

ACEN accreditation is a voluntary process that uses peer review to assess nursing academic programs. It provides specialized accreditation for nursing education programs, offering certificates, diplomas, or recognized professional degrees. In attaining this status, SSC’s nursing program has showcased its skill in five areas: administrative capacity and resources, faculty qualifications, student support, curriculum development, and program outcomes. This recognition reinforces SSC’s commitment to excellence in nursing education.

SSC’s full-time Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program provides students with specialized training to cultivate an understanding of nursing theory and practice. Graduates are equipped to deliver healthcare services to the community in various roles. Upon program completion, students are prepared to sit for the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).

To learn more about the ACEN accreditation or the nursing program, please contact the SSC Nursing Department at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2260. Fall Concert Series to Feature Winners of Young Musicians’ Competition

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–Winners from the 6th Annual Young Musicians’ Competition will grace the stage alongside their adult counterparts in this year’s Fall Concert Series at South Suburban College (SSC). The competition, held in April and open to District 510 and Northwest Indiana students aged eight to 18, witnessed the participation of 22 talented students. Among the standout winners was Eric Nickerson, a junior from Homewood-Flossmoor High School, who clinched the top spot in the Senior Artist Division for ages 15–18.

Eric Nickerson, reflecting on his journey to success, attributed his discovery of this opportunity to his SSC teacher and conductor. “My private teacher, Ingrid Krizan, is a conductor here,” said Nickerson. “She told me about the opportunity and started preparing me for it.” Originally drawn to the violin and viola, Nickerson’s passion shifted after watching the renowned 2CELLOS on YouTube. “I follow a lot of the famous soloists in the world now, “Nickerson added. “Probably the biggest would be Sheku (Kanneh-Mason). I remember seeing a video of him playing the Elgar at the BBC Proms, and that was a pivotal moment in my life when I decided that this is something I want to pursue.” His aspirations now revolve around becoming an orchestral cellist.

Nickerson is set to join his fellow champions in SSC’s Fall Concert Series, an annual event presented by the SSC Music Department and open to the public throughout October. The series boasts a diverse range of musical performances to cater to various musical tastes.

This year’s series kicks off with the SSC String Orchestra on Monday, October 16, at 7 p.m., featuring violin, cello, and bass arrangements. Under the direction of Ingrid Krizan, the concert will showcase pieces such as “Take Five” by Paul Desmond, “Masquerade Waltz” by Khatchechurian, and “Fireworks Music” by Handel. Violinist David Howard will also lead the Chamber String Ensemble through the First Movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1.

Following that, the SSC Jazz Combo and Jazz Orchestra will take the spotlight on Wednesday, October 18, at 7 p.m. Director Jeff Brath will guide the audience through pieces like “Skylark” by Hoagy Carmichael & Johnny Mercer, and “Black and Tan Fantasy” by Duke Ellington.

Subsequently, an all-inclusive instrumental performance awaits as the SSC Symphonic Band takes center stage on Friday, October 20, at 7 p.m. under the baton of Wesley Woodard. The evening will feature a repertoire including “Gumsucker’s March” by Percy Grainger, “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and “Lola Flores” by Terig Tucci. The SSC Voices, led by Mike Cierski, will precede the recital, offering choral renditions of “A Song of Thanks” by Carl J. Nygard, Jr., and “What A Wonderful World” by Weiss/Thiele, arranged by Robinson.

The grand finale of the Fall Concert Series will be a Lecture Recital presented by Professor Henry Dickhoff on Wednesday, October 25, at noon. His presentation, titled “The Harmonic Devices in the Compositions of Cedar Walton,” will delve into the life and selected compositions of the late jazz pianist, offering insights into Walton’s contributions to the expansion of hard bop music—a subgenre of jazz that extends from bebop music and emerged in the early 1960s.

Performances for all concerts in the series will be held in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the first floor of the South Suburban College Main Campus, 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. Admission to all concerts in the series is free and donations are appreciated to benefit the Music Scholarship Fund. Free Learning Opportunities Available and Volunteers Needed for the South Suburban College Literacy Tutoring Program

South Holland, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is seeking participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills, whole language experience, combined with effective communication skills. Residents are welcome to volunteer as tutors and encourage others to take advantage of this free professional development opportunity.

Once certified, SSC’s volunteer literacy tutors visit adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring is flexibly scheduled based on the availability of tutors, learners, and tutoring sites. The following locations have been established as tutoring sites: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Public Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Main Campus Library, South Holland; South Suburban College Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Blue Island Public Library; Dixmoor Public Library; Tinley Park Public Library; Markham Public Library; Midlothian Public Library; and Thornton Public Library.

SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy (AVL) Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

The August training will take place at the South Suburban College Oak Forest Campus in Oak Forest, IL on Tuesdays and Thursdays from August 1 through August 17, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This 12-hour program culminates with literacy training certification. ICCTA’S Monaghan Presents Service Award to South Suburban College Trustees DeFilippo and Daly, Receives Honorary Degree

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Executive Director of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) Mike Monaghan made a special trip to the June Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of South Suburban College to acknowledge and present the ICCTA Service Award to both Vice-Chair John Daly and Trustee DeFilippo.

“The ICCTA would like to recognize and congratulate Trustees John Daly and Tony DeFilippo on their dedicated service to the Board of South Suburban College, Community College District 510, and the Illinois Community College System,” said Monaghan at the open meeting.

Daly, an Oak Forest resident, has served as a member of the SSC Board of Trustees since 1991. He became Vice-Chairman in 1994 and served as Chairman of the Presidential Search Committees. As Vice-Chair of the Board, Daly leads SSC’s ongoing efforts to improve services while maintaining a stable or reduced tax rate. DeFilippo, a Calumet City resident, works as a registered pharmacist and is responsible for the advancement of medical education and clinical trial opportunities at academic and medical centers. He serves in this capacity throughout the country. On the board level, DeFilippo serves as the SSC’s Finance Chair, a role he has filled for nearly his entire tenure while the college has collected 24 consecutive COE awards for excellence in financial reporting from the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO).

Not to be outdone, the SSC Board of Trustees surprised Monaghan with an award of their own in advance of his June 30th retirement when they presented him with an Honorary Associate of Arts Degree from SSC.

“On behalf of South Suburban College and our Board of Trustees, I would like to thank Mr. Monaghan for all of the visits he has made to our campus, for all of the support he has provided to SSC and the ICCTA for the past 15 years,” said Chairman Zuccarelli. “It is our honor and privilege to bestow this rare Honorary Degree to you as we wish you the very best in your retirement.”

Michael S. Monaghan became the Illinois Community College Trustees Association’s fifth executive director on January 1, 2005. As the leader of one of the nation’s premier trustee associations, Monaghan brought 40 years of experience in higher education and the legislative arena while advocating on behalf of lllinois community colleges. He previously served as ICCTA’s director of government relations from 1989 to 2004, where he developed a statewide advocacy program and organized annual Lobby Days in Springfield and Washington, D.C. He also received the Illinois Society of Association Executives’ 1998 Government Relations Award for his successful efforts to establish a state health insurance program for community college retirees. Most recently, the ICCTA renamed its Meritorious Service Award in his honor.

Monaghan added, “I am honored and humbled to receive this honorary degree. Furthermore, I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to work with this Board and college regarding State issues. Truly, South Suburban College is a friend and stellar partner to the Illinois Community College System.”

SSC Seeks Tutors & Participants for Adult Volunteer Literacy Program

7/31/2014

Celebrate International Literacy Day by becoming a volunteer tutor!

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–SSOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of this free program.

New tutor-training sessions will take place on the Main Campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. from August 26th through September 11th in Room 1243c. The tutor training is an 18-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is scheduled by the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites.

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Division of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE).

Tutors will receive one free professional development hour through this program in Adult Education, Reading, Writing, and many other subjects. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

In just its third year of operation, SSC’s Adult Volunteer Literacy Program has enlisted hundreds of volunteers to date and is already an award-winning program, earning two prestigious Spotlight on Service (SOS) Awards from the Secretary of State and Illinois Press Association. Volunteer tutor Mary Gercken won an SOS Award in 2012 and a literacy learner Tennie Fitts won the Spotlight on Achievement SOS Award in 2013. Gerken and Fitts are featured in a video accessible on YouTube entitled Improving Lives through Literacy. Also featured is author Ruth J. Colvin–a 96 year old SSC alumnus. (Visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ttli_Xa73pc to see the video or access it from www.ssc.edu under the “Adult Education” link.)

If you would like to volunteer or know someone who would benefit from these services, please contact Christopher McElroy, Coordinator of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email cmcelroy@ssc.edu . South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State St., South Holland, Illinois.

SSC Approved for New Manufacturing Certificate Program

7/22/2014

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) was notified in a letter last week from the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) of their approval for a new Manufacturing Basics 16-hour Certificate, effective immediately. SSC plans to roll out the new credit program at the start of the fall semester–August 18, 2014.

Within SSC’s district and region, manufacturing companies are expanding their workforce to include a variety of levels of skills. For example, a local furniture manufacturer has tripled its workers in the past five years and is now in the process of adding still another location. This new certificate will prepare students for entry-level and promotional opportunities in the field of manufacturing. The courses are designed to provide students with foundational information, principles, theories and techniques, and current technologies necessary to work in a manufacturing environment. Students will be introduced to manufacturing scenarios to enhance the learning process, as well as have the opportunity to conduct research and interviews of those who have been successful. They will receive information developed by a labor market-based program as well as industry-recognized credentials from the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC), by taking the four assessments leading to the Certified Production Technician certification. Math is included through a course that will be contextualized for the manufacturing environment. The final course will be an internship, allowing students a hands-on opportunity to be part of the world of manufacturing.

“We are extremely pleased to receive these INAM funds so that we can meet the needs of our workforce while helping residents achieve gainful employment,” said Becky Admave, Dean of Extension Services. “This program could be very beneficial to manufacturers in the south suburban and northwest Indiana region, and we look forward to putting it into action immediately alongside our other new programs.”

The new program is funded by the INAM grant. INAM (Illinois Network for Advanced Manufacturing) is a network of 21 community colleges across the state of Illinois. INAM has been tasked, through a multi-million dollar grant from the Department of Labor, to train and certify students for entry into the rewarding field of advanced manufacturing. The funding has assisted community colleges throughout Illinois to upgrade their advanced manufacturing facilities with the latest equipment, expand welding and mechatronics labs, and update curricula to reflect the changing face of manufacturing.

SSC and its Business & Career Institute (BCI) have been called upon by local manufactures over the past few years more than ever to develop curriculum to meet the wide range of skills needed for their growing labor demands. SSC also opened a state-of-the-art Welding Lab last January and is offering a variety of welding classes crossing over several new programs. Plans are in place for a comprehensive credit welding curriculum coming in 2015. Additionally, BCI is near completion on the construction of a high-tech, hands-on Manufacturing Lab at the college’s Oak Forest Center. Other new cutting-edge, short-term programs include Industrial Maintenance Technician, Highway Construction Careers Training Program (HCCTP), Industrial/Brownfield Safety, Land Reuse and Public Safety Certificate, Green Entrepreneur and Green Construction, and more.

“Growth in manufacturing and in the TWL [transportation, warehousing and logistics] fields is both significant and rapidly evolving in our region, and represents an opportunity for our area,” said Admave. “This new program is just another step to ensure that SSC plays a vital role to foster this growth and provide the career pathways for our residents now and in the future.”

SSC’s Business & Career Institute serves as a regional headquarters for workforce preparation, employee training, business development and technology deployment. BCI provides training, consulting, and economic and business development resources for the Chicago Southland. For their efforts, BCI has been recognized as a High Performance Business & Industry Center by the Center for Adult and Experiential Learning, among other accolades.
