A rendering of the Cook County Household Hazardous Waste Facility

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility will provide residents with a safe, convenient, and environmentally responsible way to dispose of materials that are toxic, flammable, corrosive, or otherwise hazardous to human health and the environment. These materials, commonly found in homes, garages, and workshops, should never be poured down drains, placed in regular trash, or dumped outdoors.

Accepted Items Will Include:

  • Paints, stains, and varnishes
  • Household cleaners and disinfectants
  • Automotive fluids (motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid)
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers
  • Batteries (household and automotive)
  • Fluorescent bulbs and other mercury-containing items
  • Pool chemicals and propane tanks
  • Electrical ballasts
  • Ink and toner

The Facility Will Feature:

  • Drive-through drop-off for ease and safety
  • Staff trained in hazardous material handling
  • Secure containment and storage areas
  • Partnerships with certified recyclers and disposal vendors

Why It Matters:

Proper disposal of household hazardous waste helps prevent pollution of air, water, and soil, protects sanitation workers, and reduces risks to public health. By using the HHW Facility, residents contribute to a cleaner, safer community and support local sustainability goals.
