South Suburban College Announces Development of Barber College at South Holland Campus

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – The South Suburban College Board of Trustees unanimously approved the establishment of a new Barber College at its December 12th Board Meeting. SSC’s goal is for the Barber College to launch its first class during the Fall 2020 Semester. The program has been submitted to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) and is pending approval. Construction for a new, fully equipped barbering facility has already begun in a highly visible first floor location at the college’s Main Campus in South Holland.

“We are extremely pleased by the response from the community as we researched several new programs that will be coming to South Suburban College,” said Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, SSC President. “Barbering can be a lucrative career that provides entrepreneurial opportunities. This new educational track will be much more accessible and affordable through our community college than the alternative options available to our constituents.”

Dr. Stokes said the Barbering program was established in part by a Workforce Equity Initiative (WEI) grant that SSC received through the Illinois Community College Board which included funding for several new in-demand programs. The WEI project is designed to create, support and expand short-term workforce training opportunities in high need areas within SSC District #510. Through expanded access, opportunity, and support services, the project is anticipated to yield impactful outcomes for individuals, families, communities, local businesses.

WEI provides wrap-around services including comprehensive financial assistance and academic support to participating students within five program areas providing stackable credentials including Nursing and Patient Care Technician (PCT), Basic Nursing Assistance Training Program (BNATP), Community Healthcare Worker (CHW), and Certified Production Technician (CPT) in addition to the Barbering program. Students who are not selected to participate in the grant will still benefit from the opportunity to enroll in the following new programs.

The Barbering curriculum is a 12-month credit program leading to professional certification. SSC will be offering a 50-hour Barber Technician (BT) Certificate and a 65-hour Associate of Applied Science Degree in Barbering track for students seeking a college degree as a part of the program. Both tracks will include preparation and testing for National Barbering Written Licensing Examination, which is essential to applying for licensure in Illinois.

“South Suburban College’s Barbering program will be the only active public Barber School in the state,” added Matt Beasland, Dean of Adult & Continuing Education and administrator over the Barber College. “It will provide our students with quick access to a career credential that can lead to family sustaining wages.”

According to BLS data, the average salary for a Barber in Illinois is $42,930, or $20.64 per hour with an increase in demand of 9% by 2026. In the Southland area, there are currently 286 new job openings for barbers.

The Barbering program at SSC will offer programming and support at a fraction of the cost to attend area proprietary institutions. For more information about Barber School and the WEI programs at SSC, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2413, email workforceequity@ssc.edu or visit www.ssc.edu/wei.

Jordan Scott Photo Exhibition on Display at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition of photographs by Jordan Scott in the Photo Four through the Closing Reception on November 20th at 12:30 pm.

Scott received a Chicago Photography Academy Certificate in 2015 and a BA from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. He grew up in Skokie, Illinois, nearby a business district extending roughly a mile in all directions from the corners of Peterson and Lincoln Avenues. For fans of the vintage, the unusual and the seedy, the offbeat and out of place style of architecture on Peterson and the unfashionable motels on Lincoln hold a special place. On close consideration, these buildings are beautifully out of time and place. These now squalid and crime ridden rest stops (several offering hourly rate options) were once considered family friendly and modern. It’s just a matter of time before the city or local community groups demand their demolition, or the current owners finally sell for redevelopment. Scott decided to document some of these idiosyncratic structures before the inevitable occurs.

SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2445 or visit www.ssc.edu/art. Drawings by Chicago Artist Mike Benedetto on Display in South Suburban College’s Dulgar Gallery

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– The South Suburban College Art & Design Department present an exhibition of drawings by artist Mike Benedetto in the Dulgar Gallery through the closing Artist Reception on Thursday, October 17th at 1 p.m.

Mike Benedetto is a Chicago artist who does conceptual work in various media. His work investigates the self and its relationship to identity, family, society or culture. Benedetto graduated with an MFA from The University of Chicago, a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis.

“Since 1996 outer turmoil has brought internal discord to the surface. Rants about world circumstances are echoes,” said Benedetto. “In this series of work, childish notions are paired with real world calamity. Violence against beauty. Innocence of the ‘what’s within the picket fence versus awareness of what’s outside?’ TV news versus the fluffy filling between the segments. Delicate technique versus very loud noise. The process is tiring, painstaking, frustrating, meditative. It makes silence. The OK is felt in the room. Somewhere in it, in certain moments.”

The public is welcome to visit the art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the 1st Floor of SSC’s Main Campus. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This delightful, fast moving and humorous play is directed by Ellie Shunko, manager of the Kindig Performing Arts Center and Lansing resident. Shunko is looking for 10 actors to fill the cast. “This Cinderella story is not the Disney version or a musical,” says Shunko. “The story contains a lot of humor. Court Reporting Program Open House and Free Evening Class “Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand” Coming to Oak Forest Center

OAK FOREST, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting a Court Reporting Open House on Wednesday, October 23rd from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in Room 5190 of the college’s Oak Forest Center. The Open House will showcase this unique profession and wide-open job market, along with SSC’s program and curriculum.

New this fall is the free NCRA A to Z program, an evening Court Reporting for beginners class which is an opportunity for potential students to learn the alphabet in steno, write on a real machine, and decide if pursuing an education in court reporting or captioning is the right choice. Sign up and learn from the experts through Intro to Steno Machine Shorthand on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. from November 5th through December 10th. Enrollment into the Court Reporting Program is open for the spring semester so this fall is the perfect time for individuals to take the introductory course and assess their interest in the field.

SSC is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and its Court Reporting Program is one of a few in the Chicagoland area that is certified by the National Court Reporters Association. Court reporters use machine shorthand to capture the spoken word quickly and accurately. The use of sophisticated computer equipment has broadened the nature of the profession. SSC’s program focuses on the theory behind it all, with an emphasis on judicial reporting.

Court reporting is an interesting, challenging field that can provide a flexible work schedule with excellent income potential. Annual salaries of court reporters and captioners can reach upwards of $80,000 and beyond. There is a severe shortage of skilled reporters in the Chicago area, and courts need court reporters to record trials of all types. Reporters also provide closed captioning of live television such as the news and sporting events such as football, baseball, and basketball games to aid the hearing impaired.

To RSVP or for more information, call (708) 596-2000, ext. 3217 or email LCooke@ssc.edu Fall Registration is in progress at SSC with classes beginning August 20th. The Oak Forest Center is located at 16333 S. Kilbourn, Oak Forest, Illinois.

Genaro Palacios Exhibition “Textures of the World” on Display at South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition titled “Textures of the World,” photographs by artist Genaro Palacios in the Photo Four Gallery through October 4, 2019.

Genaro Palacios was born in Mexico City. He studied Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Tec de Monterrey (CDMX)/Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain). When his children were born, he decided to change his profession radically and chose to do something that gave more meaning to his life. He moved with his family to Colombia (one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity on the planet) where they lived for five years. He began there his photographic studies and a close and intimate relationship with nature. He started to work with elements and textures from nature reinterpreting it from a different perspective.

“I work with nature most of the time, looking for shapes, abstract landscapes, lines, patterns and textures.” said Palacios. I require patience and a narrow observation. I usually use color as my main ally trying to excite the sensibility of my spectator, but I also work in black and white. Through these transformations and reinterpretations of reality, my goal is to get the attention of the viewer and inspire others to awaken their capacity for wonder in such simple things that we can find around us in nature in order to preserve it.”

Palacios has taken several courses and workshops with renowned photographers such as Kike Calvo from National Geographic and John Quintero, as well as at the Escuela de Fotografía Motivarte from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Palacios has collaborated with travel magazines like “Four Seasons Magazine” and “Revista Equipaje.” He is a 2015 International Color Awards Nominee.

SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The arrival of Sheila Mahoney (Rose Backlund of Lansing), a travel agent who is helping Peter plan a surprise vacation to Rio for Laurel, complicates matters even further, since she thinks Victoria is married to Willy and is planning a honeymoon in Rio for the two of them. By the time Victoria shows up with the passports for the surprise vacation, Willy shows up with his passport and Victoria’s for a quick escape, and Carlos shows up with a pair of forged passports to help Laurel and Peter attempt their escape.

Court Reporting Program Open House Coming to Oak Forest

OAK FOREST, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting a Court Reporting Open House on Thursday, July 25, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., in Room 5190 of the college’s Oak Forest Center. The Open House will showcase this unique profession and wide-open job market, along with SSC’s program and curriculum. New this fall is an evening Court Reporting for Beginners class.

Broadcast captioners, for example, can earn over $100,000 per year and may work out of their homes.

South Suburban College Plants Garden for Pollinators

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–This spring, 17 South Suburban College staff, Green Club students and their families gathered together to kick off the college’s community garden clean up and to plant a special garden just for pollinators. The pollinator garden will benefit butterflies, bees and birds by providing food and nectar sources, as well as plants for butterflies to lay their eggs. The pollinator garden contains flowers and herbs, while the vegetable plots will benefit from insect pollination, which results in a more abundant fruit and vegetable yield.
The heavy jobs of weeding and digging were much more fun when families came together to make the weedy spot look gorgeous and become productive. Everyone was excited to meet each other and work together to share the tools and take over when someone else was tired. Cooperation was key to getting all 21 plots set up and ready for planting. Some people were better at digging up the grass, some people were brave and donned gloves and pulled the spiky thistles, and the kids really enjoyed saving the worms from the shovel.

“One lesson we all learned was the importance of Pollinators and that they are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we take each day,” stated Alysia Robinette, the event’s coordinator. “Our pollinator garden includes flowering plants, water and a resting place for insects. We focused on growing native and non-invasive species with continuous blooms throughout the season and used only organic fertilizer. Families can take this knowledge home with them and plant their own pollinator gardens.”

SSC’s garden is now registered as part of the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge. This year’s challenge asks participants to plant three pollinator-friendly plants that bloom at various times during the growing season, that is, one during the spring, one in summer, and the last in fall. That way, pollinators will have food through most of the year.

“This year’s garden is just the beginning,” added participant Joanna Tassin, SSC. “Next year we hope to add another pollinator garden!”

South Suburban College is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

South Suburban College Awards Over $100,000 in Student Scholarships

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL –The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) once again awarded over $100,000 in scholarship funds for Academic Year 2020 to local students at the college’s annual Academic Achievement Reception in May. In doing so, the SSC Foundation surpassed the $2.1 million in total scholarships since it began awarding them in 1989.

“It is an honor to serve on this board and to be able to assist so many deserving students to begin and continue their college dreams,” said Tim Woloszyn of Fifth Third Bank, and SSC Foundation President. “Thank you to all of the donors – SSC employees, alumni, members of our community and Foundation directors – who have generously supported these scholarship programs so that we can help residents in our community to improve their lives through higher education.” Woloszyn and his wife Christy themselves established the Delainey Belle Memorial Fund during the Foundation’s donor drive last fall in honor of their daughter, which raised over $6,000 in total for SSC students pursuing a Nursing Degree or related field.

Whether the recipient is a high school graduate, an unemployed resident looking for a career change, or a single parent pursuing their college degree for the first time, the SSCF offers scholarship assistance to all students in need. Many are struggling to balance family, employment, and school responsibilities while they are often unable to receive Financial Aid. Scholarship money is raised primarily through the annual spring Showcase Gala and fall Scholarship Donor Drive providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors.

Woloszyn added that the SSC Foundation has further assisted the college with nearly $1 million in other special student projects, facility and technology improvements that are otherwise not in the college budget.

Making a donation can be an easy and affordable way to leave a lasting legacy–the SSCF staff works cooperatively with individuals and organizations to develop a donor plan of any level. New scholarships may also be established with naming rights or in memorial for a minimum of just $1,000. Donations may be made online from www.ssc.edu/foundation, via PayPal to foundation@ssc.edu, or via cash, credit card, check or bequest.

At SSC, 90% of students fall under the low income, first generation or disabled criteria. Established in 1973, the SSCF is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization chartered in the State of Illinois and is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization (EIN: 237191738). For more information, please contact the Foundation Office at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463 or foundation@ssc.edu.

Highway Construction Careers Training Program Graduates are Recognized at South Suburban College

OAK FOREST, IL–When Jacob Mora, 22, received his Highway Construction Careers Training Program Certificate last week at South Suburban College’s HCCTP Graduation, he looked for his mother who he found smiling from ear to ear in the audience. Chasity Winiecki, 44, had plenty of reason to be excited for her son as she knew his future was bright. After all, she was already enjoying a rewarding career at Judlau Contracting, Inc. in Homer Glen since she completed the program herself in 2018.

“I’m so proud of Jacob—I can’t believe he’s following in my footsteps,” said Winiecki, who is currently in a two-year apprenticeship as a laborer. “I know he learned an amazing amount of stuff and I know the money is great. And I absolutely love the work!”

The Dyer, IN duo are the first mother and son to graduate from HCCTP at SSC since the program started back in 2014. Since that time, 223 of 324 students have competed the free 12-week program which is the largest of the 12 community colleges in Illinois that offer HCCTP.
HCCTP was implemented to increase the number of minorities, women, and disadvantaged individuals working on IDOT highway construction projects. The training consists of an intensive program to teach the skills necessary for acceptance into the highway construction trades and provide opportunities for careers with high wage potential. Career opportunities include cement mason, electrician, pipefitter, carpenter, laborer, and equipment operator. The requirements for admittance include: valid driver’s license, 18 years or older, high school diploma/GED, and completion of assessment testing.

Mora earned his GED from Merrillville High School, said the program was perfectly suited for his situation. “I love to work hard, and if you love to work hard you’re going to get the most out of this program. I learned a lot of different skills in a short period of time. I highly recommend it.” Mora is currently seeking a pipefitter or elevator constructor apprenticeship opportunity.

Chasity added, “People questioned me when I first told them about the program but I’m here to tell you that it’s for real!”

While job placement is not a guarantee upon HCCTP completion, 7 of the college’s current 10 graduates have already earned jobs or apprenticeships with their newfound skills. SSC will be offering its next HCCTP course this summer at the college’s Oak Forest Center. Orientation and assessment testing will take place June 11-13th with the program set to begin on July 15, 2019.

All candidates must have a valid driver’s license with them to attend orientation. For more information please visit www.ssc.edu/hcctp, call (708) 596-2000, ext. 3219, or email hcctp@ssc.edu. Para información en Español llame (708) 210-5740. All orientation and assessment testing will be held at the Oak Forest Center. The Oak Forest Center is located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue, Oak Forest, Illinois 60452.

South Suburban College Instructor Gerald Griffith Receives Red Tulip Award From Village of South Holland

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–Members of the Village of South Holland Education Commission visited South Suburban College’s May Meeting of the Board of Trustees to make a special award presentation to longtime college Biology instructor Gerald (G.A.) Griffith.

“The Red Tulip Award is presented annually to educators who work with South Holland students and who demonstrate outstanding service by going beyond their daily duties to effectively change student lives,” said Mike Nylen, Chairman of the Village of South Holland Education Commission. “On behalf of the Commission and the Mayor, Clerk and Trustees of the Village of South Holland, we are proud to have presented this award to such a worthy recipient as Gerald Griffith.”

Nominations are evaluated using a scoring rubric for demonstrating a high commitment toward student achievement, extending oneself beyond the classroom, exhibiting enthusiasm about teaching and caring for students, modeling appropriate behavior for students and exemplifying professionalism. The Red Tulip Award also comes with a $250 check from the Village. Griffith, an instructor at SSC since 1990, said he was honored to be recognized with his first award.

“I would like to thank the Education Commission and the Village of South Holland for this honor,” said Griffith, a South Holland resident. “I feel fortunate to have been able to work with people I enjoy personally as well as respecting their views on education. It sounds cliché but I always tell my students to do something that they love and it won’t feel like work, and that’s how I feel about teaching at South Suburban College.”

In addition to serving as a Biology instructor for 29 years, Griffith serves as Department Chair for Life Sciences and has served as President of the Faculty Union at SSC for more than 10 years.

Griffith added, “SSC has two advantages in the classroom that I think are important to student success – we have small class sizes that allow students to connect with faculty, and our faculty’s primary focus is on teaching, rather than research.”

Mr. Griffith will also be recognized at the Village of South Holland Board Meeting on June 3rd at 8:00 p.m.

South Suburban College is a community college with locations in South Holland and Oak Forest that has been providing quality, accessible education for more than 90 years. Summer and fall class registrations are currently in progress. Visit ssc.edu for more information.

South Suburban College Announces New Pharmacy Advisory Board, Entry Level Summer Program

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– South Suburban College’s Pharmacy Technician Program has undergone a series of changes over the past academic year under the direction of new program coordinator Alfred Evans. Changes include new curriculum and delivery strategies, and most recently, the college announced its new Pharmacy Faculty Advisory Board.

The advisory board includes the following regional experts and SSC personnel:

  • Dr. Laura Licari, PharmD, President, Illinois Pharmacist Association and Instructor, Roosevelt U College of Pharmacy
  • Ms. Tamera M. Scott, CPhT, Certified Pharmacy Technician, University of Chicago Hospital
  • Reverend Calvin Bryant, Jr., R.Ph., MBA, Pharmacy Manager, Walgreens
  • Dr. Rhonda K. Davis, PharmD, President, Chicago Pharmacists Association
  • Mrs. Cindy Morris, Thornwood High School Division Leader for Science/CTE
  • Dr. Adrienne Reaves, Allied Health Chair, South Suburban College
  • Jeffery J. Waddy, Dean of Allied Health, South Suburban College
  • Mrs. Veretta Brooks, Allied Health Administrative Assistant, South Suburban College
  • Mrs. Linda Bathgate, College Academic Counselor, South Suburban College
  • Dr. Dectric Fletcher, MD, Adjunct Faculty, South Suburban College
  • Professor Aleta Kemp, R.Ph., Adjunct Faculty, South Suburban College
  • Alfred W. Evans Jr., R.Ph., MSJ, Program Coordinator, Pre-Pharmacy and Pharmacy Technician Programs, South Suburban College

“I am so thankful to have these experts committed to advising our pharmacy programs,” said Evans. “It brings SSC to the forefront in educating pharmacy technicians with the new implementation of higher standards and quality of pharmaceutical care. These highly talented professionals are committed to the community by providing quality education that focuses on the public’s health, safety and welfare in the delivery of pharmaceutical care and medication therapy.”

Since Evans arrived in 2019, he has worked to streamline the program to meet the needs of both Pharmacy Technicians and Pre-Pharmacy Transfer students more efficiently, and yet maintain all requirements of the accrediting organizations. New to the Pharmacy Technician Program is the Entry Level Pharm Tech Course, an 8-week summer offering which is the approximate time required to acquire the State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician License. Students will complete their licensure application during the course. There is also a new 16-week Advanced Level Pharm Tech Course offered in the fall and spring Semesters. The entry level and advanced level programs are guidelines established within the industry that provides technicians with either a job used as a stepping stone or a career that sustains the quality of the professions in pharmacy.

To achieve the Pharmacy Technician Certificate from SSC – a critical component to becoming hired as a pharm tech – students must complete a minimum of 39 hours including prerequisites. The Pre-Pharmacy Transfer curriculum offers a 45-hour General Education pathway and aligns course requirements differently with regional schools of pharmacy as outlined in the catalog and on the college’s website: www.ssc.edu.

SSC’s Pharmacy Technician Program is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). With the growing demand for pharm techs throughout the country, the ASHP will likely be making changes to standards for training pharm techs. According to Evans, SSC is preparing to be on the cutting edge of this transition.

“Productive, knowledgeable pharm techs are needed more than ever before in the workforce,” added Evans. “It’s an exciting time for our program because we are ready with the talent and technology to provide students with rewarding careers while meeting that demand.”

For more information, please call Alfred Evans, Coordinator, Pre-Pharmacy & Pharmacy Technician Programs, at (708) 596-2000 ext. 2204, or email aevans@ssc.edu.

South Suburban College’s Adult Volunteer Literacy Program is Offering Free Services and Seeking Volunteer Tutors

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College is currently seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program.

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market.

New tutor Summer Semester Training Sessions will take place at the college’s Main Campus in South Holland on May 20-23rd from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with Literacy Training Certification. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods.

Tutoring sites have been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring schedules are based on the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites.

Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

If you would like to register for the upcoming volunteer tutor training class, or if you know someone who could benefit from tutoring services, please contact Raylynn Stokes, Literacy Coach of the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program, at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2558, or email rstokes@ssc.edu. A sophomore guard, Lewis averaged 26.6 points, 3.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 3.2 steals this season for the Bulldogs. SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) student Babatunde Adamson, of Hazel Crest, was recently sworn in by Marty Lareau, SSC Vice President and Board Secretary, for his first term as the new Student Trustee at the college’s April Board Meeting. He was warmly welcomed to his new post by Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli.

“Welcome, Student Trustee Adamson, we look forward to getting to know you and helping you learn about the educational process and board governance,” said Zuccarelli, a 40-year veteran of the Illinois Community College Trustee’s Association (ICCTA). “Your participation and input on behalf of SSC students will be very important to us.”

Adamson, 21, moved to the United States from Nigeria a little more than two years ago with his father and sister. He began pursuing his college education at SSC in the Spring 2017 Semester. His sister currently attends the University of Illinois–Chicago.

“I have had a great experience at South Suburban; the college faculty and support services have really provided me with a good foundation for success,” said Adamson.
Adamson is pursuing his Political Science degree at SSC and one day hopes to follow in his mother’s footsteps as a foreign services officer.

“I’m very excited to serve on the SSC Board of Trustees,” added Adamson. “I wanted to get involved and become a voice for the students. I hope and do as much as I can for them and that this opportunity will help me be the best I can be.”

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–South Suburban College (SSC), with the assistance of Career Development Systems (CDS), hosted the 12th Annual Video Competition on Thursday, April 4, 2019, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center. Aragon credits his teacher, Brian Wujcik, for their overall success. “He is an amazing instructor. He did a really good job preparing us for the competition this year. SSC’s Court Reporting Program is Hosting an Open House at the Oak Forest Center on May 9th

OAK FOREST, IL–South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting a Court Reporting Open House on Thursday, May 9th from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the Oak Forest Center. The Open House will showcase this unique profession and wide-open job market, along with SSC’s program and curriculum. SSC is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and its Court Reporting Program is one of a few in the Chicagoland that is certified by the National Court Reporters Association.

Broadcast captioners, for example, can earn over $100,000 per year and may work out of their homes.

3217 or email LCooke@ssc.edu The Oak Forest Center is located at 16333 S. Kilbourn, Oak Forest, Illinois.

Kryder Solo Exhibition Now on Display in Photo Four Gallery of South Suburban College

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL–The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition titled “Eclectically Yours, Tanya,” photographs by artist Tanya Kryder in the Photo Four Gallery through April 4, 2019. There will be a closing reception for the artist on Thursday, April 4th at 12:30 p.m. The Photo Four Gallery is located in Room 4338 of SSC’s Main Campus.

Tanya Kryder is an emerging fine art photographer based in Northeastern Indiana. She works in still life—constructed reality through digital composites and experimental (alternative/historical processes). While her composite work is dark and surreal with a bit of whimsy, that follows several themes with one common connection, the human condition. Meanwhile, her alternative process work is still in its experimental phase and is ever-changing in content and subject matter.

Kryder began her love affair with the camera at a young age. However, it wasn’t until she found a mentor that taught her traditional darkroom that she realized she had a passion for the whole artistic process, form capture to final print making. She holds a degree in Fine Art Photography from
Academy of Art University. She started her freelance career in 2009.

Kryder gained national recognition for her volunteer work with a project near and dear to her heart, focused on historic cemetery preservation. She worked on the project as the photographer, photo editor and graphic artist. Tanya has participated in four group shows, two art fairs and has had work published in more than 14 publications.

South Suburban College Foundation Seeks Support For Scholarship Fundraiser Gala

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – Each year the South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) hosts a spring gala from which proceeds benefit critical scholarship opportunities. The SSCF is now seeking support from local residents, alumni and community partners for Showcase 2019: Blueprints for a Future Workforce on April 12, 2019, at Odyssey Country Club. This year’s event will both highlight, and in part support, Manufacturing & Technical Education programs at SSC.

The annual gala evening event begins at 6:30 p.m. and features an open bar and premier buffet dinner, silent auction, dancing, and the outstanding music of Rhonda High Browne & Pieces. Individuals and local businesses can support this mission while marketing themselves to approximately 300 guests through several tax-deductible sponsorship levels and auction gifts. Tickets are also available for $125 each.

With the cost of higher education on the rise and the level of state funding on the decline, students are finding it more and more difficult to afford a full-time college education. The SSC Foundation’s support is often critical for students to begin or continue their college education. Donations for this cause are fully tax deductible.

Registrations, auction donations and sponsorships can all be made online from sscf.givesmart.com. (Foundation Staff will pick up donations for auction.) For more information, please call (708) 596-2000, ext. 2463 or email foundation@ssc.edu.

The SSC Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of 25 of the south suburban area’s generous business, civic and community leaders. The SSCF has now awarded over $2 million in scholarships since 1989. In 2018, over $125,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to SSC students.
